Veterans Honored Internment (VHI) is a South Dakota not-for-profit 501(c)(3) program supported completely by volunteers and donations. The volunteers hand build quality caskets and urns for veterans and their spouses. Each vessel includes a small honor plaque with the inscription, “Made for a Veteran by Veterans”.
What are the eligibility requirements for a VHI burial vessel?
- Be an active or former member of the active military, National Guard, or selected reserve
- Have been released under conditions other than dishonorable
- Be the spouse of a veteran that meets the former requirements
- Provide a copy of the veteran's DD-214 or other discharge certificate
- Be a South Dakota Resident
- Agree that any money donated for a vessel may go into VHI’s general fund if not used within 30 years from requested date.
Does my spouse qualify for a VHI burial vessel?
Yes, if you’re a veteran who meets the requirements you and your spouse both qualify for a VHI vessel.
How long does it take to receive my burial vessel?
You can receive your vessel almost immediately at your time of need.
How are the burial vessels shipped or transported?
Several locations have been identified throughout South Dakota to store vessels. When a request has been made, a VHI representative will work with the requester to make arrangements with the individual or funeral home for delivery.
How far in advance should I request a burial vessel?
As far in advance as you are able. However, the vessel may need picked by the family/funeral home. It works best if you can order prior to your need.
Do the vessels meet cemetery burial requirements?
Each vessel meets the requirements to be used in all South Dakota federal cemeteries, including the Black Hills National Cemetery and the Sioux Falls State Veterans Cemetery. You may choose to check with your specific cemetery to be sure, but currently haven’t run into any with restrictions.
